Corner Conference Science Fair Judges Needed

  The Corner Conference Science Fair will be held Monday, November 19^th, at Fremont-Mills. Each school district is asked to bring 5 judges to the science fair. The judges will meet at 9:30 AM for a brief orientation with judging to follow and end by 1:00 P.M. Previous judges have had positive experiences meeting students from Southwest Iowa and finding out what interests the students. If you are interested in judging, please contact Carla Erickson (cerickson@stantonschools.com), Kevin Blunt (kblunt@stantonschools.com) or call the high school at 712-829-2162. 

7th & 8th Grade Science Fair Projects

  Seventh and Eighth grade students are required to complete a Science Fair project for school. The top 20 projects will then be selected to attend the Corner Conference Science Fair on Monday, November 19^th. Projects must be experimental in nature and will be due Monday, November 5^th. Each student will need a tri-fold display board for their project. Junior Class “Thank You”

  The junior class would like to extend a huge “Thank You” to all who ordered magazines or gave monetary donations toward their annual fundraiser for Prom. The fundraiser was very successful. We appreciate your continued support!

Horatio Alger National and Ak-Sar-Ben Scholarship Program

-be enrolled full time as a high school senior in Nebraska or western Iowa, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;

-critical financial need ($55,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is required);

-involvement in co-curricular and community activities;

-display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity;

-demonstrate academic achievement (minimum grade point average of 2.0);

The Hagan Scholarship

1. Application Deadline November 15,. NO EXCEPTIONS.

2. Applications reviewed for completeness and eligibility.

3. Applications Evaluated.

4. Semi-Finalists provide supplemental information.

5. Finalists notified and interviewed in April, 2017 in Columbia, Missouri.

6. Scholarships awarded and notifications mailed “Return Service Requested.”

Must be a Citizen of the United States.

Must have attended as a junior and senior an eligible public high school.

Must be a student in the 2018 high school graduating class.

Must have achieved a high school CGPA of 3.50 or higher.

Must score 23 or higher on the ACT (Composite Score); or 1,200 on the New SAT (Reading & Math).

Must enroll in a four year college the first semester following high school graduation.

Must work 240 hours in the twelve months prior to the start of college.

Must complete the FAFSA in 2017 using 2016 tax return information.

FAFSA EFC must be less than $6,500.

     Must apply for eligible Federal and State grants.

Must not have been convicted of a felony.

ATHLETICS

Viqueen Volleyball

  On Saturday, September 29^th, the varsity team traveled to the Tri-Center tournament. The squad played matches against Fremont- Mills, Westwood-Sloan, Tri-Center, Red Oak and Lawton Bronson. A huge congratulations to Viqueen Tara Peterson who was named to the All-Tournament team. On Monday, October 1^st, the Queens hosted Griswold for round one of the Corner Conference tournament.  The Viqueens were victorious winning the match three sets to one.  On Tuesday, October 2^nd, the Queens traveled to Sidney to take on the Cowgirls. The Viqueens lost the match 0-3 which placed them in the consolation match of the conference tournament on Thursday night, October 4^th. The Viqueens took on the Fremont-Mills Knights in a contest to decide third and fourth place. On Saturday, we have a team playing in the Red Oak Freshmen tournament and the varsity squad is headed to a tournament in Indianola. The Viqueens will return to action on their home court on Tuesday, October 9^th, as they host East Mills. Parents Night will also be observed this evening.

Viking Football

  The Vikings contained the speedy Trojans to cap off homecoming week with a victory. All the Vikes were able to see some valuable minutes on the playing field and were able to show improvement. 

The Vikings (5-1) will now travel to Sidney to take on the very physical Cowboys (5-1) as each team continues to battle for a playoff

position. Kickoff in Sidney is at 7:00 PM. The JV game scheduled for Monday at Lenox has been cancelled.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Trick or Treat on the Trail

  Stanton Betterment Association’s 12^th Annual Trick or Treat on the Trail will be held on October 27^th from 3:00-5:00 PM. They are in need of groups to pass out candy, hayrack ride helpers and approximately 400 little goblins. To sign up or for further information, call Jacque Bates at 829-2814 or email her at batesjnb@myfmtc.com. No dogs please. Trick or Treat at Accura Healthcare will be 3:00-4:00 PM.

Homecoming 2020 Plans Begin

  Homecoming 2020 will be here before we know it! The Stanton Homecoming Committee is looking for ideas and volunteers to help us celebrate Stanton’s 150^th Anniversary! If you were unable to attend the meeting on September 23^rd, but wish to be a part of the activities, please contact Jenna Ramsey at (712)829-2540.

Scholastic Book Fair

  The Scholastic Book Fair will be coming the end of October. It will be displayed in the elementary concourse. Check your school calendar for the dates of the fair.

Discussion on IPERS

  State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald will be at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in the lower meeting room on Wednesday, October 10^th, at 12:00-1:00 PM to meet with current and former public employees to discuss IPERS. The goal of the meeting is to provide information about IPERS in general and to answer any questions the group may have. Treasurer Fitzgerald has served as an IPERS trustee and custodian for 35 years. In that time, IPERS has remained a secure, strong, and sustainable retirement system.  The meeting is open to the public.
