JANUARY 23, 2017, REGULAR BOARD MEETING
The Stanton School District Board of Directors met at 5:30 PM on Monday, January 23, 2017, in the Board Room for a regular session. President Brian Bates called the meeting to order with Directors Mark Lindgren, Jeff Sorensen, Paul Vanderholm, and Tom Weis present. Additional attendees were Superintendent Chris Herrick, Board Secretary Tammy Boyer and guest Sheila Mainquist. K-12 Principal Kevin Blunt arrived at 5:45 PM.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Director Lindgren made a motion to approve the agenda with a second by Director Weis. The motion carried unanimously.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Director Vanderholm made a motion to approve the minutes of the December 21, 2016, meeting with a second by Director Sorensen. The motion carried unanimously.
TRANSPORTATION
School Bus Sales will be bringing a bus that runs on gasohol on January 24th for the school to look at and try out.
FINANCE REPORTS
Director Lindgren made a motion to approve the finance reports with a second by Director Sorensen. The motion carried unanimously.
CONSIDERATION OF BILLS
Director Sorensen made a motion to approve the bills with a second by Director Vanderholm. The motion carried unanimously.
OLD BUSINESS
ADA COMPLIANCE RENOVATON PROJECT & ANDERSON LIGHTING PROJECT UPDATE
Purdy & Slack have been doing the preliminary work with the engineers and an alternate location may be worth looking at as another possibility for the ADA bathroom and shower, which could be located just inside the shop area. There may be a small savings had and other efficiencies at this location. A portable chair lift has been located for the stage area but the board would like other options considered. A topographical survey needs to be done on the baseball field and should have two performance spec for the lighting project soon.
SUPERINTENDENT UPDATES
IOWA SCHOOL REPORT CARD
Sheila Mainquist, School Counselor, reported on the Iowa School Report Card and how scores were calculated and the school rating. The high school and elementary both had an acceptable rating with the elementary being .1 from a commendable rating. This will be shared with the staff at their next Professional Development meeting.
3RD GRADE RETENTION/SMARTER BALANCE ASSESSMENT STATUS
Both the 3rd grade retention and Smarter Balance Assessment are on hold by the legislators.
ALLOWABLE GROWTH
There is no legislation action on supplemental state aid.
PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE
K-12 Principal Blunt reported that Iowa Assessments would be taken week of January 30th with the PTSO, along with the school, would be providing breakfast to all student 3 days that week. The Booster Club is in the process of providing weights for the athletes. The girls’ basketball regional brackets came out today. The boys’ basketball districts have been set with something new this year of having the coaches seed the teams in their district. The Junior High Science Fair will be held at Fremont-Mills on February 15th with the students having a chance to qualify for the State Science Fair. The Swing Choir State Contest is January 30th at Lewis Central Middle School with Stanton Swing Choir performing at 3:50 PM. Swing Choir Luncheon will be held on January 29th at Mamrelund Church basement with the Swing Choir performing between 12:30-1:00 PM. The Middle/High School teachers are posting homework assignments on JMC so students and parents can check their account and see the assignments. Drivers Education class will be starting on February 8th. Matt Prieto of SWIsportsCorner had a good article on the girls’ basketball team on FaceBook.

Speech Students who all received I’s at District Contest and will advance to the State Contest, Group Impro of Noah Kammerer, Camden Sundburg, and Abby Volquartsen; Musical Theater of Megan Shafer and Alexis Stoakes; Radio Broadcasting of Libby Ernst, Noah Kammerer, Savanna Moffett, Chloe Smith, Camden Sundburg, Abby Volquartsen, and Jody Vanderholm; Group Improv of Megan Shafer, Chloe Smith, and Alexis Stoakes.
Mr. Dave Snyder and the girls’ basketball team on their 2nd place finish in the Conference Basketball Tournament.
Mr. Jeff Grebin, Mr. Kevin Blunt, Mr. Dan Stoakes, and the boys’ basketball team on their 2nd place finish in the Conference Basketball Tournament.
The Good Shepherd Christian Preschool on earning a 4 Star Rating on QRS Rating.
Mrs. Leanne Johnson would like to thank Reece Anderson on his good work with the 4th grade students.
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT UPDATE
HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
The Human Growth and Development Committee will be meeting on January 30th to finalize what curriculum they will be recommending to the board next month.
PERSONNEL
NEGOTIATIONS WITH SEA
The Personnel Committee met today with the SEA for the SEA first proposal. The next negotiations meeting will be held on February 15th before the board meeting.
RESIGNATION REQUEST
Director Lindgren made a motion to accept the resignation of Jeff Sorensen, Baseball Coach, with a second by Director Vanderholm. The motion carried 4-0 with Director Sorensen abstaining.
NEW BUSINESS
DRIVER EDUCATION FEES/TEACHER SALARY
Director Vanderholm made a motion to set the Drivers Education fees at $315 for in district students, $370 for out of district students, and pay the instructor $230 per student.
ADJOURNMENT
President Bates adjourned the meeting at 7:45 PM. The next regular meeting for the board is set for February 15, 2017, at 5:30 PM in the Board Room.
