Open Enrollment
The Stanton School District is recognized state-wide for its academic excellence. As in all rural communities in Iowa, Stanton’s school population has been shrinking. However, our increase in open enrolled students is helping to off-set the decline. In addition, the Stanton Area Industrial Foundation has been very active over the past 20+ years building new homes to attract new families to our community. This proactive effort has enabled our school district to maintain student populations that allow our school the ability to offer a broad curriculum. Stanton students have taken advantage of shared high school classes with Villisca and Red Oak. Students are also successfully completing college courses both online and through Southwestern Community College in Red Oak and Iowa Western Community College in Clarinda. Our students have the opportunity to enroll in approximately twenty different advanced classes for dual credit which means they receive both high school and college credit.
Open Enrollment is the process by which parents/guardians residing in an Iowa district may enroll their children into another Iowa school district under the terms and conditions of Iowa Code section 282.18 and 281–Iowa Administrative Code 17.
Open Enrollment Requirements
Parents/guardians considering the use of the open enrollment option to enroll their child/ren in another public school district in the state of Iowa should be aware of the following dates:
- March 1, 2020 – Last date for regular open enrollment requests for the 2019-2020 school year for students in grades 1-12.
- September 1, 2020 – Last date for open enrollment requests for entering kindergarten students and those students falling under the “good cause” definition for the 2020-21 school year.
A timeline waiver may be considered for those students falling under the “good cause” definition for the 2020-21 school year.
Parents/guardians of open enrolled students whose income falls below 160% of the federal poverty guidelines are eligible for transportation assistance. This may be in the form of actual transportation or in the form of a cash stipend.
Parents should be aware that open enrollment may result in the loss of athletic eligibility at the varsity level. Junior high and junior varsity athletes would be eligible upon attendance. Parents have a right to appeal to State Board if an original request to open enroll was based on repeated acts of harassment or serious health condition of the student.
